VMware vExpert – What is it and is it for you?

The VMware vExpert Program is a global advocacy and evangelism program that recognizes individuals who actively contribute to the VMware community by sharing knowledge, supporting peers, and promoting VMware technologies. It is not a technical certification—it’s an annual honorary award.

Awardees are selected based on community contributions from the previous year, such as:

  • Blogging or producing technical deep dives
  • Presenting at conferences, VMUG events, or meetups
  • Creating podcasts/videos
  • Helping others in forums and social channels
  • Code contributions

Steps to Become a vExpert

  1. Contribute to the VMware community (blog, speak, help, share).
  2. Gather evidence of all contributions.
  3. Submit an application during the annual window.
  4. Optionally seek guidance from a vExpert PRO.
  5. Wait for February announcement to see if you’re selected.

Why Becoming a vExpert Really Matters

1. Your Content and Expertise Get Major Visibility

VMware actively promotes vExpert-created content—blogs, videos, podcasts—across official VMware channels. This dramatically increases your reach, helping you grow your personal brand and be recognized as a trusted voice in the community.

This exposure positions you as a thought leader, making it easier to gain followers, build credibility, and influence the conversation around VMware technologies.

2. It Elevates Your Career and Professional Reputation

The vExpert badge is recognized globally as a symbol of expertise and leadership in the VMware ecosystem. Many employers and recruiters specifically look for vExperts when hiring or engaging consultants.

You also get listed in the official vExpert Directory, which companies often reference when searching for specialists.

This can translate into:

  • Better job opportunities
  • Consulting gigs
  • Speaking invitations
  • Enhanced credibility in customer-facing roles

3. You Get Exclusive Insider Access

As a vExpert, you receive access to:

  • Pre-release product information
  • Roadmap briefings
  • Private beta programs

This gives you a competitive edge, allowing you to stay ahead of the curve with new VMware technologies and strategies.

4. You Get Valuable VMware Licenses for Home Labs

vExperts receive free evaluation licenses for VMware products and even free VMUG Advantage membership, which includes:

  • VMware product licenses
  • Discounts on certifications
  • Access to exclusive training and events

Bottom Line: Why You Should Care

Becoming a vExpert can significantly benefit you if you:

  • Want to grow your influence as an IT leader
  • Enjoy sharing knowledge and helping others
  • Value exclusive access to VMware technologies
  • Want to accelerate your career and expand your network
  • Want recognition for the work you’re already doing
